What is a password manager and why you should use one

By Sam Sheridan - 21st November, 2020

A password manager is a software program that helps you create and manage strong, unique passwords for all of your online accounts. It generates random passwords for you, and stores them in a secure, encrypted database.

When you need to log in to an online account, the password manager can automatically fill in your username and password for you, so you don't have to remember them. This makes it easier to use strong, unique passwords for all of your accounts, which can help protect you from cyber criminals and online threats.

There are several advantages to using a password manager:

  1. Convenience: With a password manager, you only have to remember a single master password to access all of your other passwords. This makes it easier to use strong, unique passwords for all of your accounts, without having to remember them all.

  2. Security: A password manager generates and stores strong, random passwords for you, which can be very difficult for hackers to guess. This can help protect you from online threats like phishing attacks and password cracking.

  3. Compatibility: Most password managers are compatible with a wide range of devices and web browsers, so you can access your passwords from any device with an internet connection.

  4. Ease of use: Password managers are usually very easy to use, with simple interfaces and intuitive features.

  5. Time-saving: A password manager can save you a lot of time by automatically filling in your login credentials when you visit a website. This means you don't have to spend time typing in your username and password every time you want to log in to an online account.

Bitwarden is a password manager with a completely usable (and one of the best) free offerings that helps you create and manage strong, unique passwords. It stores your passwords in a secure, encrypted database, and can automatically fill in your login credentials when you visit a website.

Bitwarden is available for a wide range of devices and web browsers, and offers a variety of features to help you stay organised  and secure online. Some of these features include two-factor authentication, secure notes, and a username/password/passphrase generator.

Bitwarden is generally easy to set up and use. To get started, you will need to create a Bitwarden account and install the app on your device. Once you have done this, you can begin adding your online accounts to Bitwarden. This usually involves entering your login credentials (username and password) for each account.

To use Bitwarden, you will simply need to log in to your account and navigate to the website or app that you want to access. Click the icon and Bitwarden will then automatically fill in your login credentials for you. You can also use the Bitwarden app to view and manage your passwords, as well as to generate new, random passwords. Bitwarden is designed to be user-friendly and easy to use, with a clean, intuitive interface.

If you are not familiar with password managers and why you should be using one, this video walks through what a password manager is, and why reusing passwords is an extremely bad idea.

I walk through how to get started with Bitwarden, a secure open source password manger; from the installation process to up and running.
